Waveland

Monday, I ended up working in the kitchen. Camp katrina feeds all the workers as well as a local school. I dished up 100 portable bowls with ravioli. Joy and I then scrubbed the showers, washed the kitchen floor, prepared lunch and washed dishes. After lunch, I was releaved from kitchen duty (which i hated) and joined my group at Gene and Mai's house. Mai has been an artist for all her life, so she showed us her work in her studio. They were great. Mai mostly used oils and pastels. The majority of her work was destroyed by the water, however a few survived with little to no damage. We returned to the house, and I helped paint their house a buttercream yellow. It is beautiful. I stood on the high latters and painted the peak of the house. It was very fun. I ended up with most of the paint on the house and a little on me. We went back to the Napa building very hungry and tired.
Tuesday, I returned to Gene and Mai's house to complete the painting project. After much discussion, we decided the house needed another coat of paint. Luckily, the second coat went on a lot smoother than the first, and we finished the house by 5:00 just in time to clean and go to dinner.
Wednesday, I yet again went to Gene and Mai's house. Art (the camp director) split our group up. I went to scrape and bleach Gene and Mai's porch. My shoulders were very angry with me. I stood on a ladder all day with my hand above me so that I could scrape the ceiling and then bleach the ceiling. We had to wear protective glasses and a mask since the porch was invested with mold. Luckily no pictures! Once we finished, i joined the second half of our group. The house needed doors installed and siding put on. The doors were almost complete upon my arrival so i just got to rip off the shimmies. Kirk and Daryl began to side the house. They insisted that Sally and I hammer! It was great. So now i know how to side a house. We returned to the NAPA building where dinner was waiting. After eating, the massage theripists gave our group members a 10 minute massage. It was wonderful. This group comes every 2 months and massages the doctors, nurses, police officers, volunteer workers, and local leaders. They all had an amazing personality and more importantly amazing hands. About 9:30 we crammed into the van for our long ride home. I was exhausted so i slept most of the way home despite my pained rear and sore legs. We arrived home about 12:15. It was an amazing trip. I'm ready to go back.
