SPRING BREAK!!

Yesterday, the entire school began their spring break. So you might be asking: What would a young teacher be doing on her spring break? Well, i arrived in waveland mississippi this morning. I left Friday around 5:30 pm. We drove through saturday night and arrives here at 8:30 am slightly rested. (We took a van with little to no leg room and crammed 7 adults in it.)
Saturday we began by unpacking. WE are staying at the NAPA building which previously was a car part store. They have set up a sleeping quarters. The bunk bed are right next to each other with a little space for walking. We have selves next to our beds for all our stuff. We also have two womens showers which we take turns using and 8 portipotties. (I'm not a portipotty kind of person.) We went off to work and painted a man's house. He had lost his house, garage and all belongings. The only thing that remained on his property was the concrete slap from his garage. He has built that slap into his house. He is doing all the work himself and it is very small. He was so thankful.
Sunday we had the day off so we went and drove around the gulf. For seven miles on the coast line, a quarter mile inland, there is nothing. All the plantation houses and prime coast houses have been completely destroyed. the only thing that remains are a few pillons. The decks, restaurants, and churches are also completly gone. It's devistating. You can not express in words what it looks like. Peoples cars, clothes, houses are all mixed in with the toppled trees. You even see children's toys and pools smashed to pieces. On the other side of the road is the water. the beaches are beautiful and the water looks calm. It is unbelievable that the water caused this devistation. Waveland is on a peninsula, so that water rose from both sides. The entire town was under at least ten feet of water> The town had a water surge of 36 feet. Cars were twisted, trees were snapped, houses were blown and washed away. We then went to a southern baptist church which was amazing. The church is half a mile from the coast and recieved little to no damage. We ended the day by walking around the neighborhood and visiting people from the last time our leader was here.
We went to the house which we are painting tomorrow. The house is owned by an elderly couple. They are so funny. We laughed for most the hour which we were there. The water in their house was 8 feet high. They have since had crews to clean, redriwall, and prime. Today we are going to paint the extrerior and interior. The lady (May) is an artist so she has picked beautiful colors. The man (Gene) is eighty years old and has cleaned the majority of his house alone. They seem like extrodinary people and i'm excited to begin work on their house. Keep checking to see pictures and more stories.
